This recall alert is concerning bacterial infections that have been linked to deaths and blindness in multiple states. The infection, known as Vibrio vulnificus, is a naturally occurring bacteria found in coastal waters, and can become deadly if it enters the body through open wounds. People with weakened immune systems, such as those with chronic liver disease, are particularly at risk. Symptoms of vibrio vulnificus infections include fever, chills, decreased blood pressure, and blistering skin lesions. If left untreated, it can lead to septic shock, organ failure, and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging people to take precautions when swimming in or eating seafood from affected areas, such as avoiding swimming in warm, brackish water, wearing protective clothing and footwear, and promptly seeking medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
